Since 1976, Elmer the elm tree has served as the official mascot of the Forestry Department. Elmer's role is to:
Represent all the trees that have been planted throughout Minneapolis.
Educate kids in grades K through 4 about the importance and care needed of our urban forest
Promote the "Adopt A Tree Program" and encourages the watering of trees during dry conditions
Participate in Arbor Day celebrations, educational programs, parades, park celebrations.
