Disposal of Private Wood Debris
Homeowners are responsible for the disposal of wood debris originating on private property. Wood debris is defined as wood chips, branches, logs and stumps. The only exception may occur through our Storm Response Program. In the event of a severe storm that generates a significant amount of wood debris, the Department of Public Works and the MPRB may declare an emergency and assist in the disposal of private debris for a predetermined period of time.
What should you do with your tree debris after a storm?
Minneapolis residents have several options for getting rid of private tree debris from storms:
- Property owners can use the City’s regular yard waste services to get rid of small storm debris. Yard waste services include the pickup of limbs, grass clippings and other yard debris. The City will pick up limbs that are less than 3 inches in diameter, are cut to less than 3 feet long, and are bundled with rope or twine. Bundles should not weigh more than 30 pounds. Clippings and other debris must be bagged.
- Residents may hire a licensed contractor to remove the debris. The City will not pick up wood debris placed on the boulevards from private tree contractors.
