Walking/Cycling Trails

A groomed walking trail is never far away in the Minneapolis Park System. MPRB maintains almost 50 miles of designated walking trails in the winter along the Grand Rounds.

Enjoy a walk in Theodore Wirth Park, around the Chain of Lakes, downtown and along the Minnehaha Parkway, the Mississippi River, St. Anthony Parkway, and Victory Memorial Parkway.

The Park Board keeps the paths plowed and sanded, but users should be aware that there may be icy conditions due to weather conditions and the high volume of foot/bike traffic that packs down snow before plows can remove it.

Sanding is less effective during periods of extreme cold temperatures and during periods of melting and refreezing when temperatures warm during the day and drop at night. The Park Board does not use salt on its trails to prevent damage to adjacent turf and nearby lakes, creeks and rivers.

Off-Road Cycling

Theodore Wirth Park offers a 4.36 mile trail through a wooded, hilly section of the park east of Twin Lakes, north of Highway 55 and west of the golf course. The 18-inch-wide trail is designed mainly for beginner and intermediate cyclists with alternatives – marked on trail signage – for advanced cyclists.  Cyclists are reminded to say alert for snowshoers and cross-country skiers.
