About Tree Stump Removal
The MPRB allocates $300,000 annually for stump grinding. This amount is an increase from a few years ago due to recognition by MPRB Commissioners that there is a need for this service. Typically, most of the stump grinding budget is used by Memorial Day. It will take $1 million to eliminate the entire backlog.
Each spring, the MPRB Forestry Division starts by grinding the stumps that must be removed so a tree can be planted. These are called “deep grinds”. In 2008 nearly half of the stumping budget was spent on deep grinds. The remaining funds are spent grinding stumps in an entire neighborhood.
The most cost-effective removal approach is on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis. The neighborhoods slated for 2009 will be determined after all diseased elms are removed. Those that have waited the longest and have the most stumps to grind will be done first.
All stumps are contractually removed by private companies as this has proven to be the most cost-effective approach.
Residents may hire a contractor to grind the stump bordering their residence. If this is done please contact MPRB Forestry so the removed stump may be dropped from the list.
